  5. Methionine aminopeptidase  (EC 3.4.11.18) (MAP) is responsible for the removal
  6. of the   amino-terminal  methionine  from  nascent  eukaryotic  cytosolic  and
  7. cytoplasmic prokaryotic  proteins,  if  the  penultimate  amino  acid is small
  8. and uncharged.

  10. Prokaryotic and yeast MAP sequences show [1] a number of conserved regions. We
  11. selected one which contains three histidine residues, as a signature pattern.
